Bream Creek Show

Bream Creek Show

Straight from the airport, we got there just in time for The Grand Parade

Hardly had we returned from our pre-Christmas trip to Tassie than Qantas came out with another special offer for flights to Hobart, so we booked for March, partly because of limited seat availability, partly because of an Arts Festival (that we ended up ignoring anyway!), and allegedly so that Paul could get enough status credits to qualify as a Gold Frequent Flyer member, thus catching up with Anne.

This time we arranged to spend the whole fortnight at the Riverside self-catering cottage in Glaziers Bay, where we had spent part of our previous visit.

Mon, 27 Mar - White Gum Wool

White Gum Wool is at Oatlands, in Central Tasmania, about one-third of the way from Hobart to Launceston, or nearly two hours drive (each way) from our base in Glaziers Bay.  But well worth it!

White Gum Wool is owned by Nan Bray, who breeds merino sheep and produces speciality yarns for the craft market, which is how Anne had come across her.  But she is no ordinary sheep farmer.  To quote from her web site "My wool growing production system relies on three main commitments:  excellence in nutrition, a conservation land ethic, and thoughtful animal welfare.  These commitments are expressed through cherishing the biodiversity of the landscape, a conservative stocking rate and shepherding to link the two."

Today she very generously took us into her home, showed us around the wool and yarn sheds, and took us out with her when she went to inspect her sheep - although it's autumn, they are lambing at the moment and need her care and attention, but from a careful and respectful distance.
